Verbatim M-Disc – Longer Lasting Archival Media
The selling point of M-Disc is that it has a single inorganic recording layer that’s much less likely to degrade over time than regular DVD-R discs’ combination of organic dye and reflective layer. In fact, it’s the separate reflective layer that often fails over time- but M-Disc media doesn’t have one of those!
The downside with M-Disc is that you’ll need a drive specially designed to record to them, although once recorded, you can read or play back the discs in most ordinary drives.
M-Discs DVDs are undeniably far more expensive than regular DVD-R discs (even Verbatim ones), but they’re intended mainly for archiving rather than everyday use, so they’re worth taking a look at if you’re looking for longer-lasting data storage.
At the time of writing (August 2017), we’ve got both M-Discs and M-Disc compatible recorders in stock in our Dundee store. Need advice? Feel free to ask us!
