Solid state drives (SSDs) are the latest way to improve the performance of almost any computer. Rapidly falling prices in the past few years have led to significantly increased use, and the growing user base means that data recovery facilities with the skills needed to work with faulty SSDs are increasingly important.
One might think that the lack of moving parts made SSD failure much a rarer event than with hard drives- in fact, it’s still worryingly common. They can fail for a number of reasons- some of which are the same as those for hard drives, but many of which are entirely new.
Causes of SSD Failure and Issues with Data Recovery
Electronic components can still fail, particularly on cheaper consumer models. And did you know that a large percentage of SSD failures are due to the controller failing, not the memory chips themselves?
Due to the properietary nature of many controllers- and their manufacturers’ desire to protect their secrets at any cost (even if it means their customers lose data)- it can often be more complicated than one might hope to recover data off them. Similarly, the use of convenient drive encryption features can be a double-edged sword, as it also makes recovery of data more complex.
SSDs tend to fail more quickly than hard drives do- often the first you know of a problem is when it suddenly stops working completely.
The TRIM facility that allows more efficient use of the the drive space can also lead to unused- and more seriously, missing or damaged- files being overwritten more quickly.
As always, stop using your SSD drive, disconnect it from your computer (shutting down if necessary) and remove power from it as soon as you are aware of a problem. The less that is done with the drive, the greater the chance of successful data recovery.
In common with hard drives, SSDs can still suffer from “logical” (software or user-caused) data loss.
Disc Depot- Reliable and Experienced in the Field of Data Recovery
This mixture of old and new issues with data loss and recovery means that you need a company with the experience and skill to diagnose and fix such problems. At the data recovery lab within Disc Depot Dundee, our technician has more than eight years experience in data recovery, and we have equipment that many of our competitors don’t (and wouldn’t know what to do with if they did).
