Come and See our Korora-mantic Penguin

We told you recently about the beautifully-designed “Korora-mantic” penguin (designed by artist Yvonne Stewart) which we acquired as part of the Maggie’s Centre charity auction.

Now that we’ve taken delivery of it, the penguin is on display in our Dundee store. You can visit any time and view it through the window, or come in and see us to get a better look at it.

The Penguin Parade might have ended, but the Korora-mantic penguin has a new home here at our Union Street shop! We’d definitely be interested to find out where some of the other penguins in the auction ended up, and perhaps we should team up with their owners and start a new penguin parade!

The Courier covered Yvonne’s creation of the Korora-mantic penguin back in April, when she explained its creation as inspired by her own struggle with breast cancer in 2008, how Maggie’s Centre helped her, World Penguin Day and her concern with the effects of climate change on “these magnificent birds”.

Meanwhile, you can visit an archive of the official website, and you’ll be pleased to hear that the auction raised a total of £540,000(!)

The description of this piece from the auction catalogue is as follows:-

Yvonne’s design is inspired by the Korora penguin, often called “the fairy penguin”. These birds are known for their strong family bond and determination to survive when faced with adversity. The design is upbeat but warns to pay attention to changes in your body. Hidden amongst the happy characters are two unsavoury creatures located at her right breast. Inspired by Yvonne’s own cancer journey and the support that the Maggie’s Centres provide, her design represents the emotional ‘Cancer Care’ journey that we all face at some stage in life, either affected by cancer or caring for someone with cancer.

This might look like a kidnapping, but it’s all quite innocent, we swear! Getting the penguin ready for the van after collecting it.

While we were collecting our penguin, we also got some quick snapshots of the other seventy nine that were being auctioned off, which you can see here.
