Introduction
We don’t offer mobile phone unlocking but a lot of our competitors do.
There are some dubious practices and dealings that go on behind the scenes in the phone unlocking business. For example, if a phone has an FRP (factory reset protection) or iCloud lock set, and you’ve been offered it, how do you know it isn’t stolen? Spoiler- a lot of people do know that it’s stolen or prefer to look the under way when they’re given an obviously questionable cover story- as do many of the people actually unlocking them.
The Important Points
- If your iPhone or iPad has a dull screen that doesn’t “light up”, it’s probably a backlight issue. We can fix this! Contact us online for more details or visit our store.
Key Points
- Salesmen can make insurance look cheap by quoting a monthly price- however, this can add up to a significant amount over the period of your contract.
- Significant deductibles on some policies can make them much less competitive than they look at first glance.
If you’re an iPhone owner, you’re probably aware that iOS 11 launched just over a week ago. Unfortunately, after upgrading, some owners are also finding that it’s apparently causing problems with their iPhones’ touch sensing.
The symptoms are straightforward- the screen stops responding properly to touch, exhibits glitchy behaviour or becomes downright unusable. We’ve had many of our own customers come in to our Dundee store with just this problem after upgrading.
We get emails like this all the time and they never fail to make us angry. We’ve already told you about the “copy” screens (those designed and manufactured from scratch by companies other than Apple) that many independent stores use in place of refurbished originals* without telling you the difference. This is what happens in practice:-

Introduction
Apple held their September 2017 special event for the first time at the Steve Jobs Theater and there were some exciting announcements. These included the iPhone X, an iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, a series 3 Apple Watch, a new Apple TV (supporting 4K video) and, of course, iOS 11.
From a repair perspective- the focus of our business and what we’ll be concentrating on with this article- the models of most concern to us are the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and the iPhone X, which we’ll take a look at here.
(NOTE: This is an in-depth article aimed at more technical users. Customers simply looking to have their iPhone or iPad fixed may find “iPhone or iPad Not Charging?” more straight to the point.)
Introduction – How Cheap Non-MFi and Fake Cables Can Damage Your Device
This article is a summary of the issues surrounding Tristar repairs, and how the damage can be caused by fake or cheap unofficial cables.
Most ordinary Apple users aren’t aware of this, but the company’s official Lightning cable isn’t simply an overpriced USB lead. It contains several chips that complete the “handshake” with the device and protect it from voltage fluctuations. This also applies to cables from other manufacturers that have a genuine official “Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod” (MFi) certification.
When Apple released the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus last year, they changed quite a few things about the internal design of the home button. While these aren’t an issue for users in normal use, there are some things you need to know if it gets damaged or needs repairing.
Our latest article goes into depth on how this affects your repair options as explaining how we think Apple are trying to eliminate independent repair stores, and what we’re doing to get round the problem. Click here to read more.
